Meet our College Counselor:

Dr. Krystle Horton serves as a college counselor for PCA and head middle school girls basketball coach.  She joined the PCA family in the fall of 2021 after serving as an assistant principal in Rutherford County Schools.  She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Grades 4-8) from Middle Tennessee State University and both her Masters in Education and Doctorate in Education from Lipscomb University.  She also served as an Academic Advisor at both Tennessee Technological University and Middle Tennessee State University.  Most recently, she became a member of the MTSU Blue Raider Sports Hall of Fame for women’s basketball. She and her daughter, Brooklyn, are excited to be a part of the PCA family.  She loves traveling, working out, attending sporting events, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends.  Her favorite thing about being a college counselor at PCA is supporting students in their journey as they trust in the Lord’s plans for them.

  • Taking College Entrance Exams

The ACT and SAT are key assessments and components of the college-going process.  Many colleges, universities, and other programs use ACT or SAT scores to determine admissions decisions as well as scholarship eligibility.  Colleges may also use your ACT or SAT score in specific subject areas to determine freshman year course placement, particularly for math.  Be sure to check the requirements for your target schools.  Aim to be at or above the posted average scores, but also keep in mind that extracurricular activities and GPA also factor into the admissions decisions as well as essays and recommendation letters.  Below are the key differences between the ACT and the SAT and resources for test preparation.

  • Class of 2024 Next Steps

Class of 2024!  College admissions season is just around the corner!  I’m excited to meet with you Thursday!  Senior year will be a whirlwind from the beginning until the end.  Getting a head start on your plans for after high school is key to a successful senior year.  Below are a few things that you can get a jump start on now.  We will discuss more details during our time together on Thursday.  Can’t wait to see what God has in store for you!

    • Take the official ACT/SAT; receive ACT/SAT prep
    • Build resume
    • Search and apply for outside scholarships
    • Schedule college visits and attend college lunch meetings/fairs
    • Create a Top 6 List
    • Ask 2-3 teachers to write a letter of recommendation
  • Scoir

I wanted to take a moment to introduce our college planning system called Scoir.  Scoir will be used to help students navigate the college selection and application process to discover colleges that match their personal as well as academic interests.

Every student will have access to Scoir where they will build a profile detailing their academic overview, extracurricular activities, achievements, and a personal bio.  This will make it easier to transfer information over to college applications when it comes time to apply.  Scoir even has a resume template to utilize when needed.  Each student can complete preferences to search for and start building a list of colleges that interests them.  Students can even take virtual tours and use the college comparison tool to explore each campus.  To keep track of the colleges of interest, students can follow them and add them to their ‘My Colleges’ list.  Parents/guardians will also have access to Scoir to assist in their child’s college selection and to gain more insight about the cost of attendance at different colleges.  In addition, students will learn their top aptitudes and suggested career paths by completing the YouScience assessment within Scoir.

Students will be required to use Scoir to request the sending of academic transcripts.  Scoir will also be used to communicate with students during the college planning process and to electronically deliver application materials to colleges.  Once students have their initial Scoir introduction meeting with me, they will receive an email invitation from Scoir to create an account.

I am excited we are able to provide Scoir to our students and families and feel confident that it will be helpful and easy to use.
